Sports Injuries in shoulder

The movements of shoulder joint are controlled by the muscles around it. Coordinated contractions of these muscles ensure prevention of injuries.

The sports injuries of shoulder are of two types:

  1. Overuse type
  2. Direct impact type

Overuse injuries are most common in the rotator cuff group of muscles. Continuous use of a particular group of muscle leads to muscle imbalance which in turn affects the quality of game. Over a period of time, pain is felt and injuries happen. Improper game techniques can also cause injuries in lower back and hip region.

Sports where overuse injuries of shoulder are common:

  1. Swimming
  2. Shooting
  3. Badminton
  4. Golf
  5. Volleyball
  6. Basketball
  7. Tennis
  8. Table tennis
  9. Cricket

Treatment protocol for overuse injuries followed at Total Rehab:

Stage-1: relief of pain

Stage-2: correction of muscle imbalance

Stage-3: Re-education of muscle action

Stage-4: Cardio-vascular re-conditioning

Stage-5: analysis of sports technique, correction of the technique; and then re-education of the       correct technique

Direct impact types of injuries are fractures, dislocations and bursitis. The first line of treatment in such injuries is rest to the part and medication. Fractures and dislocations are attended by the orthopaedic doctor.

Treatment of sports injuries with only pain relief predisposes the shoulder for recurrent injuries and also a poor quality of game.
