Introduction

Lumbar spondylosis –wear and tear of the joints of low back

Factors responsible for lumbar spondylosis

It may develop because of any of the following reasons:

  • Weak spinal muscles
  • Muscle imbalance between right and left side of the body
  • continuous sitting for more than 4-hours a day daily
  • Previous injury to back
  • Following abdominal surgery where the abdominal muscle was cut and the patient was not advised strengthening exercises or the patient was advised to no activity for more than week.
  • Hip or knee arthritis
  • Spinal deformity like scoliosis
  • Poor postures like sway back or round back
  • Presence of any foot deformity
  • Metabolic disorders like diabetes, osteoporis or hypothyroidism
  • Pelvic floor muiscle weakness
  • Joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis

Symptoms of lumbar spondylosis

Patients of lumbar spondylosis may experience any or all of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in low back while sitting or standing for long time
  • Pain in low back which spreads into one or both buttocks
  • Pain in low back which aggravates by activities and relieves by rest
  • Pain in heel or ankle
  • Numbness / heaviness in the front of thigh or in the foot
  • Very severe pain of sudden onset which does not allow any movements of the back. You feel as if your back is locked.
  • Patients with lumbar spondylosis may have associated wear and tear of the spinal disc. This will give pain similar to that of prolapse disc.

What we do?

We examine you thoroughly and identify the physical causes of abnormal stress in your back. A treatment plan is drafted to restore the mechanics of the lower back to near normal state. Kinesiotherapy, electrotherapy, manual therapy, diet and ergonomic counselling will be used to restore your pain free status.

How are we different?

We understand the body mechanics much better. The muscles of a person with diabetes will behave differently from the person who is non-diabetic. We understand very well how your muscles and nerves will behave in the presence of diabetes, hypothyroid or other medical conditions; and accordingly the exercise program is planned.

It is the sequence in which the movement is performed and the speed and position in which the exercises are performed which makes all the difference. We have treated more than 7000 cases of back pains;
